Building Friends, Family and Team

October 17-18, 2009 — it was a 2-day and a night of real fun and bonding with the whole JairoSolutions team at Isla Reta, Island Garden City of Samal. The team actually planned the get together and team building for weeks and it has finally come and I bet everybody got excited for that long awaited break. Who would not want to put some extra “life” in our busy lives, right? But actually, it is not just a mere break and fun, it is more likely building good relationships with the whole team by improving the way each team member interact with one another. A good working relationship decreases the stress in the workplace and that may mean getting motivated that eventually give way to a better productivity and efficiency towards work.

Anyway, it was past 10am of October 17, Saturday when the team arrived at Isla Reta Beach Resort. The team was divided into 3 – breakfast, lunch and dinner group – obviously each was assigned to prepare the food where they belong – that’s one way of team building! Hehe.  We had our lunch at around 12pm with different foods on the table like Pancit Canton, Buttered Chicken, Lumpiang Shanghai, fruits and our highlight dish sponsored by our CEO, Mr. Ramon Aseniero, it’s everybody’s favorite Lechon Baboy.  Thanks Sir Jett for that! Anyway, the eating session started after the meal prayer led by Mark. And so we ate our lunch with some chit chats and laughs. That was a very ordinary scene but seems a little unusual since everybody were bonded as one – sharing foods, sharing jokes, sharing smiles and sharing laughs. This sharing moment does not simply end there. After our lunch and a few hours of rest, we then played the games Yvonne, Rose and Jhona prepared. For some hours, the grown-ups play like kids – this may seem just for mere fun but the indirect building of teamwork and friendship is what counts the most. Everybody couldn’t stop laughing at real funny, exciting, “cheesy” scenes. What a great and refreshing feeling to be like kids just enjoying the time, right? With the shouts, giggles, grin and chuckles seen in the faces of each team member – obviously everybody is savoring this extraordinary shared time more than aiming to win the game to escape from consequences awaiting. It was indeed a remarkable captured moment – something to treasure, something to look forward to another one. The fun time was made even enjoyable with the crystal clear blue water of the beach plus the fine white sand. Surely, everybody had a satisfying time swimming and playing at the beach. After swimming, the team was ready for another eating time, another talk, another cracking of jokes or simply another bonding moment until everybody got tired and fell to sleep. Our second day of stay in the island is just a continuation of what we’re doing the previous day and I bet this time, the friendship is now really built, thinner border, less gaps – a united team was created. We may have not completely get off from our ordinary city life but atleast we still manage to step back and enjoy the company of the team before diving into the grind again.

Everybody had fun and we’re looking forward to another moment like this and hopefully, the next time is with the whole JairoSolutions family including you, Sir Jett.

Enough of these petty talks, we are happy to share some of the captured moments we have during our team building that mark not only in our minds but also within our hearts.

Last January 26-30, 2009 JairoSolutions team from Davao had a wonderful time when our Chief Officers visited us. Well, who wouldn’t be? It was our first time to see them in person from the past few months/years that we are working  here at JairoSolutions.

And of course, the feeling is really different when you finally see the person whom you used to talk virtually most especially to Ramon Aseniero, our CEO and Technical Project Manager. Honestly, I was even like in a “star struck” seeing him. Wooooooop!

Together with him we also get to see his wife Marikiriss Aseniero (CFO), mom (Julieta Aseniero - President) and brother (Vicsante Aseniero - former RCSO- Jairo Davao) and his cute son, Miles. They brought home some goodies for us - straight from the US. To name a few - we had chocolates, oreo, starbucks mag, perfumes, and of course coffee. The latter is what nightshift people really love the most - it keeps us alive, awake and kicking during the night. It’s a free flowing of coffee guys! *grin*

What I also love about the said visit was the fact that we didn’t get to see them only but also worked with them. As you may have known, we do online collaboration in doing our tasks/projects so that 5 days were no ordinary days for us.  And it feels good when you’ve able to talk to them (face to face), shoke hands and see them right across, beside or in front you in the office - working. Oh, and they also woke up early in the morning to report for duty at 5am just like us. (Awesome) We hope that they will visit us more often.

More pictures after the jump! Continue reading »

I wasn’t really able to sleep that much the night before we will have our outing. Aside from the fact that I have the difficulty of sleeping, the excitement I am feeling somehow adds up. Well you know, JairoSolutions is the first company I have work with and I will be experiencing my first company outing. (Whew! As in for the first time)

So I turned in late. I mean, slept only during wee hours - few hours to go for our rendezvous. (Jaaahhhh.. ) But its fine with me, I can handle it. My mom will wake me up also, she’s like my alarm clock in times like this. Hehehehe..

And the day has finally arrived where we heads out to spend some time together outside the office. Hmmnphh.. It was definitely a great way to loosen up a bit and where was that again? Oh, in Km. 20 Los Amigos Tugbok where you can find Villa Christina Orchids Garden and Resort last August 30.

[from L-R (front row): Alvin, Joan, JJ, Jhona, Yvon, Leslie, Aloha, Tino, Rose and Alma, at the back L-R: James, Fritz, Jeff and Bernard]

We were at awe to see the beauty of the place - the romantic flowers, the long and attracting swimming pool, fruits (durian, pomelo), cottages, etc…We went around taking pictures almost everywhere. Some started the singing Bee challenge already (special mention to Doods and Aloha), chit-chats, drinking session as well as the preparation of food. Speaking of the latter, I am so eager to know what will be served before us. (Stomach was growling..hehehehe) Okay….so we have lechon, fried chicken, grilled pork and fish, pansit, fruit salad and some junkfoods also. The food was more than enough to satisfy our enormous appetites. Hehehehe..(Bring house lagi). In between things we had time to dip in the water, played some fun games, sung our lungs out and drank our selves(is that right?) and even relax a bit in the shade.

There are dozens more moments like this, but this post would be too long & self-indulgent to recapture them all. Suffice it to say we had a great time. And of course, after expending all that energy, some wrapped up the day with another meal before heading back, the better part of exhausted, to each of our homes, for a hot shower and bed.

Au Revoir! I’m honestly at a loss for words now.  So let the above pics speak of what we had that day. Wakekkekeke…Arigato gozaimasu everyone for the wonderful experience and for everything.

More pics HERE. Enjoy! :)

What is There to Learn?

(Author’s Note: This entry was also published in the author’s personal blog, Beautiful Mediocrity)

My summer started with a big question mark on my head. “Where in the corners of Davao will I find a company to apply to as a student trainee?” I surely don’t want to end up next to a salesgirl in a supermarket. There are just a few IT-related companies here in this city, and I just kept on worrying if I’ll find one that will give me the kind of experience I need. After being close to desperation, I found Jairosolutions, Inc. through the help of our OJT Director Mr. Charlie.

Next morning, I just found myself at its doorstep, panting for breath, hoping that I’ll make it to the interview. I applied as a trainee for technical writing, since I’m really into blogging, and anything that has to do with writing. Having the knack for numbers and letters is really a God-given gift but no one can blame me if I love letters more than I do with numbers. (Hehehe)

I’m not about to give you a day-to-day log of my tasks. I’m pounding on this keys to let you, guys, know how was it to be a part of Jairosolutions, Inc. as a trainee.

After being briefed with the technologies used in this company (courtesy of Miss Melay), I realized it is after all a great idea to be trained in web development, particularly e-commerce websites, through ASP.Net Storefront. I felt so naive when I first heard that term because the only experience I have in web development with DBMS is using Macromedia Dreamweaver and basic ASP.

“What is there to learn? Where will it lead me? What will it have to do with me after college?”

During my whole stay, I was given the chance to work with the Jade-MMY Team in a certain project. I was made to learn XML through the help of Mr. Roselle, who I’m constantly with every morning, trying to answer all my questions about my tasks.

Aside from this learning, there are also a lot of realizations that hit me. These realizations are about the real world outside the safe corners of my student life. A year from now, I’ll be stepping out of college, taking another journey into another unknown phase in my life.

Here I am in my spot, sitting for eight hours a day; my fingers are struggling to find the right keys; my mind is busy thinking how to get things done. And there is this little voice inside me, telling me to stop, to sneak a minute or two, to observe people, to think what they’re possibly thinking, to listen, to wonder what kind of lives they live, to what kind of homes they return to after work. I pause to feel, to think, to listen, to know what these things got to do with me.

They are real live people, busy getting things done in the right, if not in the best, way possible, with mouths to feed, careers to build, with clients to please. A year after, I will be a yuppie. I will soon be like them. I’ll build my own ladder to my career. I will soon face the same issues they face. I kept asking myself “What is there to learn? Where will it lead me? What will it have to do with me after college?”

Jairosolutions, Inc. had indeed given me the kind of experience I need. Aside from learning more in the IT industry, you’ll get a glimpse, and a taste of what work really is. You’ve got to learn the values you need to advance in the ladder of your career. You’ve got to meet people who’ll make you realize the essentials to survive in this kind of industry.

Waking up six in the morning and struggling to rub off sleep and laziness from my body, are indeed worth it with the kind of learning I had with Jairosolutions, Inc.

Hilarious truth

I was searching for NGenius eNGy toons yesterday but came accross someone else’s blog instead.

I’ve read about his opinion on business conflicts, and inserted a joke he knew.  I just think of sharing his points.

In business, sometimes, we have confilcts. While conflicts are inevitable, conflicts not properly managed can be among the biggest drain on motivation, and can result in wasted money and time. Before we spend another time to argue and fight, especially when it involves getting expensive lawyers, let us remember this joke:

Two farmers were fighting over a cow. while one was pulling the head and the other was pulling the tail, the lawyer was seen milking the cow…

Just sharing this entry from TechRepublic I’m subscribed with, since we are still a start-up company

10+ dumb business decisions that an take a company down
By Wayne Anderson
Hubris, big egos, poor foresight, and lack of humanity kill great companies—small and large—every year. We can learn from their misguided decisions, but we need to do it before more of our businesses fail and more of our country’s leadership is lost forever.
The following list of mistakes represents some of the dumbest thinking by companies across all industries each year. Read them and learn from the failures of others.

“Let’s cut back on customer service levels to save money”
“Due to unusually high levels of calls, we are experiencing long delays before we can answer your call.” What kind of crap is that? What they really mean is, “Because we don’t want to spend as much money on customer service as we should, we’ll put you in a queue for as long as you can stand it before hanging up.” I recently spent 45 minutes in a Verizon queue that never ended. On the other hand, T-Mobile answered my call in under 20 seconds. Guess who has my business and my loyalty now? This is particularly dumb because the cost to acquire a new customer easily offset the costs of having a few more operators.

“Human beings can be replaced with machines to answer our phones”
Today, it’s a treat when we call a business and get an actual employee on the phone. Very few voicemail systems are as smart as they are supposed to be, and these poor tech systems cause untold losses in sales, customer loyalty, and goodwill. I am seeing a lot of real-world evidence that the cost of having a receptionist is easily offset by the improved customer satisfaction generated. My advice: Break away from the crowd and show your customers that you care about how they feel.

“We have to pay our employees less because payroll is the single biggest expense line we have”
Many companies pay as little as they can get away with in a misguided quest for better expense management. Most of these organizations experience high employee turnover and then must spend more money hiring and training newbies. In addition, this approach has hard-to-quantify opportunity costs because companies often lose profits and customers as a result of providing bad service and care while they are understaffed or using poorly trained personnel. Circuit City’s decision to “manage” expenses this way is a big reason it’s going bankrupt while other retailers are surviving.

“We’ve been very successful, so let’s grow the company more quickly”
Expanding too fast, aka the Starbucks phenomenon, can take a great concept and push it so far that it’s boring and common. The result may be stores that all look the same, staffed with lazy employees, making the business ripe for competition. Soon, every neighborhood has a couple of coffee shops, and every fast food place offers good coffee for less money. We’ve seen this occur time and again in many industries, but it’s not limited to retail or other businesses serving the public. Many analysts suggest that the downturn of once-great companies, like Boeing, Gateway, Atari, and Westinghouse, was caused by growing too quickly for their own good.

“We’ll get better results if we hire a superstar manager to run this place”
These types are usually more about promoting themselves as a brand than looking after the company—and as a result, the company’s results tank. Check out what happened to these companies when they had superstars at the helm: Carley Fiorina at HP, Ed Zander (who is still at Motorola but under a lot of pressure), and Robert Nardelli of Home Depot (now CEO of Chrysler). All of these companies paid a premium for superstars who then oversaw very poor results.

“Our company is so cool we will always have a large pool of talent available”
History is littered with once cool companies that took their ability to attract good talent for granted and now can’t regain that cache. For example, The GAP, Yahoo, and General Motors were all considered to be “the” place to work at one time or another. Then too late, they realized that all the great talent was going elsewhere. Their results show what can happen when we take ourselves too seriously. In today’s economy and in a worldwide marketplace, coolness is pretty fleeting, and the job opportunities for the best employees have become especially broad.

“There’s no place for family in the workplace”
Not having a sound maternity, paternity, or day care policy affects an organization’s long-term success. Today’s workforce wants to work with companies that respect their desires for family; they will leave to find it. As more countries find that they may soon be unable to provide citizens with healthcare and pensions, this is a bigger deal than ever. Most young women work, and more young men have been raised by women who instilled in them the importance of family. Companies like SAS provide a great example to others who want to attract and retain the best talent in the market. And this doesn’t reduce the company’s profits or ROI.

“Let’s be honest: Women are always going to want to have babies, so it’s dangerous to promote them too far up the ladder”
WPP, the world’s largest ad agency, fired its company head for this philosophy just two years ago, so don’t think it doesn’t still exist. And if you don’t know it yet, I’m happy to tell you: Women are tired of this attitude. It’s part of the reason that most business startups are being led by women in North America.

“We are an equal opportunity employer—it just looks like we’re not”
Having a management team or a boardroom full of men who all look the same might make all of them feel smart and comfortable, but it reduces new idea flow for better decisions. I am amazed that fewer than 6% of America’s largest companies have female CEO’s, and the number of companies headed by men who aren’t white is insignificant. Research on this is clear: Companies with better diversity plans have better shareholder ROI and profit margins than their counterparts. And by the way, it’s more human to treat all of us equally.

“We promoted Charley because he got great results in his last job”
Presuming that someone who is good in one role will be just as good in a broader role can be the kiss of death for the employee and the organization. This can take the form of promoting people beyond their level of competency or broadening scope beyond their capacity. For example, just because someone is a great engineer doesn’t mean he or she has the right skills to manage a department of engineers. Likewise, just because someone was tough enough to win business from a competitor doesn’t mean he or she has what it takes to manage a group or team. These are different skillsets.

“When things get rough, it’s smart to take our time to make prudent business decisions”
Actually, it’s usually better never than late. The decline of Ford has showed that reacting to market shifts and changes too late makes it next to impossible to regain lost ground. Caught in a difficult economy, with smart competitors, Ford tried to “save its way to success” by cutting expenses and reducing the volume sales of less profitable cars and sales outlets. Then, it chased high-end customers with lackluster premium brands, like Lincoln and Jaguar, while neglecting for too long its core customers’ attraction to smart and good-looking cars, like the Camry and Civic. As a result, it will never again be America’s #2 car company, and it’s likely that it may simply become an interesting niche player in the global economy.

For everyone’s knowledge, and possibly amusement, I’d like to share with you my story of JairoSolutions. This is based on my experiences and what JairoSolutions stakeholders have told me. This is not meant to be an official story. The simplest and best word to describe this article is “chismis”. ^_^x

In the beginning there was…

From what I heard, JairoSolutions was already operating in Cebu before settling in Davao. It was Filomeno (Filo) Billones Jr.who left the Cebu branch and started the Davao branch of JairoSolutions. You can say that he was the manager of Jairo Davao at that time. That was around April of 2007. He took care of everything, setting up the office, computers, entertaining the newly hired, and cleaning the office ^_^x. Floor manager ^_^x. Seriously, I’m taking this opportunity to thank Filo for what he has done for the company. If it wasn’t for him, Jairo wouldn’t have made it in Davao. The first office of Jairo was in the Brokenshire Learning System (BLS) IT Incubation Center. This is a free for a year office sponsored by Brokenshire College. Their primary goal was to help/incubate emerging IT companies in Davao. This was a good opportunity for Jairo.

The haunting

I was referred to Jairo by Jan Vincent (JV) Junsay. I was actually looking for a part time job then but Jett needed a full-time employee. But hey, the opportunity was great, so I jumped right in. For the entrepreneur-wanna-be side of me, it has always been my dream to be a part of IT startups. In this case, it was Jairo’s startup in Davao. A good opportunity, lots and lots of things to learn. I had hoped to be heavily involved in the management part of the company, putting pieces together for the growth of the company. Something to put my MBA classes to good use.

I started to work with Jairo on May 25, 2007. JV started around May 15, 2007. My first batch of collegues were Filo, Maico Tamayo, JV, and Simplicio Jison, Jr. And my first reactions of the Brok office was… “this isn’t an office”. ^_^x It was a shipping container, painted in blue, in a jungle (literally). It was located near the ampi-theater area of Brok, near the housing area in Madapo. At night, you would hear a lot of things (ie frogs, crickets, use your imagination). The shipping container was surrounded with other containers for other companies. But as far as I know, we were the only ones there. So it’s kinda freaky for the women. The water source was a 3-5 mins walk. Food source is a 24hr “sira sira” store outside the school that is always crowded with dangerous ex-men and owned by an ex-man named “Ben”. ^_^x The thing I really hate the most in the Brok office was if it was raining and you didn’t bring an umbrella, you’d be 100% super-wet. There are two paths to reach the office, one from the Brok front gate (hospital path) and the Madapo path (leads to Bankerohan, 50% chance of getting mugged or stabbed). Neither path is safe from the rain.

The pioneers

Simplicio (they call him Jong, I call him Cio) works days. Lucky guy. I didn’t get to work with him very long. But I already knew, from the talks that we had, this guy was born a leader/manager/entrepreneur. He’s got all the skills and wits to bring Jairo to the top. It’s like he knew what needs to be done in Jairo without even thinking about it. I really look up to him. Unfortunately he left too early. He would have been a great asset to Jairo. Filomeno, I originally thought he would be older but I guess that was because of his name ^_^x. He was cool, very accomodating, and a very dedicated individual. Maico was the most enthusiastic programmer I’ve ever met. He knew a lot about every technology. And he was the icebreaker of the group. He’s got jokes coming from everywhere. He kept us up during those times. Night-shift is really hard. JV, well, I already knew him well from iThink. He was still the joker who laughs out really loud. So, my first work at Jairo wasn’t really so bad because of these guys. We got along really well.

The Cebu people during these times were Ronald Nuñez, and Christopher Gabijan. I didn’t know them much though.

Coming up next… the transfer of Jairo to Diamond Bldg..
