What is There to Learn?

My summer started with a big question mark on my head. “Where in the corners of Davao will I find a company to apply to as a student trainee?” I surely don’t want to end up next to a salesgirl in a supermarket. There are just a few IT-related companies here in this city, and I just kept on worrying if I’ll find one that will give me the kind of experience I need. After being close to desperation, I found Jairosolutions, Inc. through the help of our OJT Director Mr. Charlie.

Next morning, I just found myself at its doorstep, panting for breath, hoping that I’ll make it to the interview. I applied as a trainee for technical writing, since I’m really into blogging, and anything that has to do with writing. Having the knack for numbers and letters is really a God-given gift but no one can blame me if I love letters more than I do with numbers. (Hehehe)

I’m not about to give you a day-to-day log of my tasks. I’m pounding on this keys to let you, guys, know how was it to be a part of Jairosolutions, Inc. as a trainee.

After being briefed with the technologies used in this company (courtesy of Miss Melay), I realized it is after all a great idea to be trained in web development, particularly e-commerce websites, through ASP.Net Storefront. I felt so naive when I first heard that term because the only experience I have in web development with DBMS is using Macromedia Dreamweaver and basic ASP.

“What is there to learn? Where will it lead me? What will it have to do with me after college?”

During my whole stay, I was given the chance to work with the Jade-MMY Team in a certain project. I was made to learn XML through the help of Mr. Roselle, who I’m constantly with every morning, trying to answer all my questions about my tasks.

Aside from this learning, there are also a lot of realizations that hit me. These realizations are about the real world outside the safe corners of my student life. A year from now, I’ll be stepping out of college, taking another journey into another unknown phase in my life.

Here I am in my spot, sitting for eight hours a day; my fingers are struggling to find the right keys; my mind is busy thinking how to get things done. And there is this little voice inside me, telling me to stop, to sneak a minute or two, to observe people, to think what they’re possibly thinking, to listen, to wonder what kind of lives they live, to what kind of homes they return to after work. I pause to feel, to think, to listen, to know what these things got to do with me.

They are real live people, busy getting things done in the right, if not in the best, way possible, with mouths to feed, careers to build, with clients to please. A year after, I will be a yuppie. I will soon be like them. I’ll build my own ladder to my career. I will soon face the same issues they face. I kept asking myself “What is there to learn? Where will it lead me? What will it have to do with me after college?”

Jairosolutions, Inc. had indeed given me the kind of experience I need. Aside from learning more in the IT industry, you’ll get a glimpse, and a taste of what work really is. You’ve got to learn the values you need to advance in the ladder of your career. You’ve got to meet people who’ll make you realize the essentials to survive in this kind of industry.

Waking up six in the morning and struggling to rub off sleep and laziness from my body, are indeed worth it with the kind of learning I had with Jairosolutions, Inc.
